The part of the armbar I am having the most trouble with is breaking a good gable grip. I know that as a beginner, my leg position is not good, but I feel like its more than that. How do you deal with that? Or do you simply look for something else?

  2. With reference to Mike Fowler’s Unstoppable Armbar notice that his right arm is between the guys arms. This creates space and helps alot. Now the gable grip should not be a problem. Mainly concentrate on the wrist and not the grip it self. Also pay attention to which hand is on top.

For example if the arm that is being arm bared is the hand on top in the gable grip, use your forearm of the hand inside and your hips and legs to break the grip.

No say the arm being armbar has the gable grip but is underneath ( palm up) then make sure that as you break the arm you apply an americana with your motion. If you pay attention when the opponent grabs like that the elbow begins to buckle into that direction.

The devil is in the detail.
