“The phrase is ugly and violent and threatening, but damn if doesn’t summarize the piece that I was missing!”

Roberto,
I just happened to visit your BJJ school about a year ago and at the same time signed-up for your email. To be honest I haven’t read more than a half dozen of your emails over the previous year, but recently I had a “gun to my head” experience just days before you sent that “gun” email. Thanks. The phrase is ugly and violent and threatening, but damn if doesn’t summarize the piece that I was missing! I’m going to keep reading your emails and I’m starting the 30-min morning writing exercise at 15-min tomorrow, and Thanks again for the link to the quotes.

(Sometimes it seems like my favorite UFC fighters, Frank Mir and Forrest Griffin, need the proverbial gun to their heads!)

“Thanks for the good info”

“I have learned a lot by reading the stuff you give us”

Roberto,
I like the emails you are sending — they are very informative. I want to stay current for when I get back on my feet so that I will have that knowledge to help me move farther. I can tell you that I have learned a lot by reading the stuff you give us. For instance, taking notes will help a great deal and being in college I know that first hand. I never did that in class and when I’m able to come back, I will be with pen and paper.

“I found your videos … EXCELLENT”

I found your videos on balance and using the hips under the balance tab EXCELLENT. Thank you!!

“You are clearly very good and very knowledgeable.”

Roberto,
You are clearly very good and very knowledgeable. I notice it’s often the ‘little things’ that separate the belts. We all try the same moves BUT we get more successful at them as we progress. At minute 1:47 in the above video you so effortlessly moved your left knee up your opponent’s body, like oil on ice. You don’t even realize, maybe, how important these little details are that you now do instinctively, yet they make the biggest difference. I am just a blue belt (1.5 years in) and I am trying to pick on these little details. I have never noticed anyone do that (use the knee to move the opponents arm – I might do it sometimes and not even realize it I wonder). You also used incredible balance putting your center of gravity over his head when going for the armbar. This makes it so difficult to block. Can you make a video about little details like BASE, BALANCE, LEANING, using DISTANCE (or lack there of), using the HEAD, KNEES and HIPS when transitioning from POSITION to SUBMISSION? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this long note and thinking about these concepts. I suspect you will agree they are so important, yet so difficult to teach … we learn them by putting in the time on the ground.
Best regards!!!
Greg

“You just improved my side control 100%”

Excellent, thank you! You just improved my side control 100% I never knew to grab the shoulder material!!!

“I hope to apply these mental and physical techniques to my training.”

Thank you for sharing. My daughter is in kindergarten. I spend 1 day a week at school with her class and work with her every night. She is having difficulty learning her sight words. How does this pertain? We try and try and she continues to have trouble, THEN out of no where she just gets it! I’ts like that with BJJ. I continue to train about 2 hours per day, 4 – 5 days a week as a blue belt and dream of my purple in about 6 months (hopefully) and beyond. It is hard to imagine what it will be like to just GET IT one day. I still struggle (I am 41) but I work harder than most people in my class and continue to excel (at least I am happy with my progress). Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I hope to apply these mental and physical techniques to my training. I try to relax at times, think, try new positions, go against the biggest and strongest guys in class and am not afraid to tap. I thank anyone who taps me (I know I just learned a lesson — though thankfully, it rarely happens anymore … not like in the beginning :L) Well, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! Be well!

“That is a ton of cool information.”

That is a ton of cool information. One other thing I noticed that Galvao did is that he moved from mount to knee-on-belly almost immediately, and that set up his side switch on Nino.

“Great video Roberto. This solves a big problem for me.”

Great video Roberto. This solves a big problem for me. I have been trying to do this escape with the arm somewhere other than the neck which, while not impossible, has required a lot of strength. The arm to the neck will make my techinque so much more effective and less tiring. Thank you!

“This post is great and this site is great too.”

Very good. I am from Brasil, and I love jiu jitsu and I am studying engineering, too. This post is great and this site is great too. The jiu jitsu lifestyle is one of the greatest things in my life and helps me in all little things that I do in my day.
Valeu!!!

“Thanks a lot Roberto for the video.”

Thanks a lot Roberto for the video. Is there any way that you can control the bottom guy without him escaping side control? Thank you again.

“I loved the research you did. It was very thorough.”

I loved the research you did. It was very thorough. There was a lot I didn’t know and I look foward to putting it to use. Thanks.

“Awesome videos, they will really help to improve my game. “

Awesome videos, they will really help to improve my game. Is the elbow escape pretty much the same move or is it different technique all together? Is there a way that I can copy these videos to my computer? It beats taking pages of notes. Thanks

“The resources available are comprehensive for the grappling afficionado and well-organized. Roberto takes the time and effort to demonstrate even the MOST BASIC YET OFTEN IGNORED of BJJ movements in different angles and applications. “

The BJJ Engineer website is amazing. The resources available are comprehensive for the grappling afficionado and well-organized. Roberto takes the time and effort to demonstrate even the MOST BASIC YET OFTEN IGNORED of BJJ movements in different angles and applications. I used to be very frustrated with guard recovery against guys stronger and more advanced than me until Roberto showed me the finer points of the shoulder roll. I now have one of the better guard recovery sequences in the gym in just a short amount of time learning and applying what the BJJ Engineer taught. Quality instruction! Keep ‘em coming!

“Nice instructions, keep it up.”
