Italy Trip in 2010

Let me give you the inside scoop on how it all happened. I have been in  GOAL ACHIEVING mode. I have been writting about it all over the place. I even started a website dedicated to achieving goals; www.GoGetterLifestyle.com ,but not only that  I wanted to demosntrate to my students that writting goals down and goin over them daily turns them into reality. Here are my goals: http://www.gogetterlifestyle.com/?page_id=10. I am still working on even streamlining the planning.

So one day in class I decided to go CRAZY, and I asked my most gogetting student what was something that he wanted to do before he died. Joey Ruggiero, of italian heritage, said he wanted to go to italy. I made things a bit more exciting by telling the class we will do this within three months of his announcement and that this had just become one of my goals in my BUCKET LIST. Anyways here is a funny video of Joey:

Personally I thought it would be cool to grapple inside the coloseum ( a modern gladiator fight…lol). I also

I also thought it would be cool if we did some training down tehre check a school out or a tournament I would like to visit Naples, Italy since we are from Naples, FL . I thought it would be cool. I can be a nerd at times ;) !  But for the most part I am just going to play tourist and let Joey decide the fine dining.  Here is what he has planned so far lol:

JOEY’s PLANS

Italy Trip

Italian Flag

In January, Roberto Torralbas put Joey Ruggiero (me) on the spot in front of class and asked him what he wanted to do before he died and I said go to Italy… So instead of waiting forever to get something like this done and then maybe never get it done Roberto pushed me to achieve this in three months. So In March me and Roberto will be going to Italy to be able to check that off my my bucket list.

Now that you know the background of where this story is coming from I want to share with you some of the places we are going to be visiting on this awesome trip…

Colosseum

On the top of the list is the Colosseum a place where gladiators fought and many events were help a super important stop on the trip. Were also going to see if they’ll let us grapple inside the Colosseum. Making sure to represent Team Third Law BJJ in Italy very well. Leading us to the next stop on our trip being.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="City of Rome"]City of Rome[/caption]

The city of Rome has a HUGE amount of things that you can do but mainly has some of the nicest spots to eat ever. Then after seeing all that rome has to offer, maybe visit some of the museums to see some of the sculptures, just try to see as much as possible.

These are just some of the things that we plan on doing when we get to Italy doing as much as we can as fast as we can because time is limited. More ideas on plans for Italy and PLEASE!! leave in the COMMENTS some ideas that you may have for us on things to do.

A Lesson in Perseverance - 3 Feet from Gold

In a previous article It is not all about jiu-jitsu (http://bjjengineer.com/?p=333) I talked a little bit about the importance of not giving up. There is a book out there that I really recommend everyone to read it. It is a masterpiece. Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Reach” teaches you what’s necessary to become a successful person in any area you desire. It is directed more towards a business oriented crowd, but it is mentioned in the beginning of the book that many people have had success by following it in many different areas of their lives.

Today I want to share one of the stories form this great book: 3 Feet From Gold. It is a true story so read carefully:

“During the Gold Rush Days a man was caught by Gold Fever and he west of Colorado to dig and grow rich.  He had never heard that more man has been mined from the thoughts of man that has ever been taking from the earth. He stayed to claim and went to work with pick and shovel. After weeks of labor he was rewarder by the discovery of the shining ore. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. Quietly he covered up the mine and return to his home in Williamsburg, Maryland. He told and a few neigbohrs about his discovery.  They got together the money for the machinery and got it shipped. They first piece of ore was mined ans shipped to a smelter, the returns proved they had one of the richest mine in Colorado. A few more pieces of that ore will clear their debts, then will come the big killings in profit.  Down when the drills, up when the hopes of the man…then something happened…the vein of gold ore dissaperead. They had come to the end of the rainbow and the pot of gold was no longer there. They drilled on desperately trying to pick up the vein again, all to no avail. Finally they decided to quit. They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars and took the train back home. The junkman called in a mining engineer, to look at the mind and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project had failed becasuse the main was not familiar with fault lines. His calculations showed that the vein would be found just 3 feet  from where the man had stopped drilling. And that is exactly where it was found. The junkman took millions of dollars of ore from the mine just because he new to seek expert council before giving up”

The story goes on to explain that the man had a nephew that was helping him with the drilling. He goes on to become extremely successful as he discovered  that desire and ideas can be turned into gold as long as he never quits. Never stop 3 feet away from striking gold!

I thought this was a great story that all athletes can learn from.  In our BJJ ( Brazilian Jiu-jitsu), and/or MMA ( Mixed Martial Arts

It’s is not all about jiu-jitsu.

Today I wanted to write about something I have been wanting to write for a long time.  Why do we train BJJ? I bet for everyone is a different reason. Today I will tell you mine.

It wasn’t always this way. I started like most… I loved the sport I thought it was fun , addicting, and challenging. As I saw me put more hours in it I started getting better and receiving recognition from coaches, friends, teammates and training partners which encouraged me and fueled me more onto the pursuit of excellence in the sport. I wanted to become a World Champion!

Life happened like for most individuals and I made a family based decision that separated me from my teammates. I moved to Naples, FL where I had to start my own school Third Law BJJ of Naples, FL . When this happened I had to take some steps back to then proceed forward. I had to develop students and an infrastructure where I could compete with the best in the world. My goals became more diversified. Now I didn’t just want to be a World Champion, I wanted to develop World Champions as well which is a completely different story.

When I have sat down with my coaches we have been crystal clear about how my decisions to open my own school affected me as a competitor . We have agreed that the odds are against me unless something drastically happened.

I understand that but I keep pushing for two reasons. Number one I know must people quit two feet away from striking on the gold mine, they quit just right before they make that breakthrough and a long time ago I decided I didn’t want to be that person

The second reason is because I truly believe human existence is a journey where the challenges in the journey are what brings us happiness not the destination. Once achieved we wil always emabark on a newer journey.

So probably it might make sense to abondon something when it looks harder than ever or just like it may never happened to concentrate on something that is more achievable nearby but then again …what if you were that close? What if you where two feet away from striking gold?

Then again what is the prupose of abondoning one journey for another? In the grand spec of things it is NOT ABOUT JIU-JITSU! It is about the journey that Jiu-jitsu can provide for you. There are many ways to look for a challenging journey outhere…like opening a new business, etc…I just happened to really like the one BJJ provides.

At the end of the day BJJ is a way to purify my character, and soul. It is a way to test myself and find out what else I have within me to discover. I personally believe that live should be mainly about self discovery and improvement in what ever field you are in.  If you are in jiu-jitsu …well congrats because you will really enjoy it (the lifestyle( at the same time)

The importance of TESTING! - A “McDojo Tool or Championship Team MUST”

As must of the readers of the BJJEngineer.com know I run Third Law Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Naples, FL. Third Law is growing very quickly and know it even offers kick-boxing/muay-thai.  Anyways when I started the school I had the goal of quickly putting it on the planet , producing some of the best practitioners taht the sport ahd to offer. Not as easy as I thought! Two and a half years down the road I have figured out a lot of things that are needed to build a Champiosnhip Team. In the last tournaments we have produced great results and we produce champions very often.

Nevertheless when I started the school there where many things that I do now that I would had never considered. One of them was MONTHLY TEST for students! Why not? Well back then all I heard was how testing was a McDojo tool (a McDojo is a martial arts school that usually ahs been franchised and produces very low uality practitioners…they often carry a negative reputation for lying to people) and how it was done to make more money. I tought it was a joke.

I was introduced to the idea by my friend and successful school owner Marcos Avellan of the Freestyle Fighting Academ in Miami, and Broward. I WAS HOOKED! So I decided to implement TESTING at my school.

At first I had two dilemma’s. Number one I didnt want to make any one feel bad with a bad score. Number two I didnt want to lower my standards just to make anyone feel good about themselves. I just knew that testing must take place.

Students that compete usually improve faster than those that don’t. They gain more experience, and at the same time, they TEST themselves more often. I knew implementing test will help bring the entire level of the school to newer heights.

I have always been a fan of numbers, measuring and tracking results. Testing did all of this.

So I implemented the test. I had two scales …a Percentage scale and a 1-5 scale.

Percentage Scale:

A+ 100 – 97

A 96.9 – 93

A- 92.9 – 90

B+ 89.9 – 87

B 86.9 – 83

B- 82.9 – 80

C+ 79.9 – 77

C 76.9 – 73

C- 72.9 – 70

D+ 69.9 – 67

D 66.9 – 63

D- 62.9 – 60

F Below 60

5. Excellent ( person not only did the technique flawlessly but also drilled it with intensity)–VERY DIFFICULT
4. Great ( Had a couple of important details off)- Like gripping, or placement of body weight.
3. Acceptable ( Techniqe was good enough to hit againts whitebelts peers of his same level)
2. Needs Improvement ( The technique is faulty and wont perform well if done agaisnta peer)
1. Needs to be re-learned ( The person has a clue but so many mistakes , that might as well learn it again)
0. Person was completely lost!

Now realize that a 3 out of 5 . Its actually an F in this system. The reason that is is because what is acceptable for a whitebelt its not what we are shooting for we are shooting fro performing the technique like high level upper belts( purple borwn black). The best grade in teh class was a B- and B+. I was very impress to see hwo welle everyone did. Just 30 days ago they didnt know anything about what to do on top of the halfguard.

At the end of the day I loved this system because the percentage scale ended up being like a measuring stick of how much detail they remeber from what it was taught. The 1-5 scale. Its how their coaches felt they did for their current level

What I really like about the percentage scale is that allows a lot of room for improvement.

I will keep modifying the testing systema nd improving it, but iw as really satisfied with the performance of the students.

Ok it needs to be stated that this test was designed for whitebelts and blue belts. Blue belts where scoring B-’s ( low 80’s) which is what was expected. It is also super important to add that the testing is not only an indication of how well or bad is the student doing in your class, but ALSO A GREAT REFLECTION OF HOW GOOD OF A JOB THE TEACHERS ARE DOING.

In conclusion the TEST served as great feedback, great measuring tool, and a good way to establish clear vision and constructive criticism in the team. Can’t wai to the next one.

Ohhh and before I forget…even though McDojos do and abuse testing… EVERY TOP UNIVERSITY IN THE WORLD TESTS THEIR STUDENTS ( for those who by now are not convince yest that having a monthly test at your school is super beneficial.

Health Insurance for Athletes MADE SIMPLE!

If you’re shopping for health insurance, get ready for a headache.

You might think you know what a deductible is. But do you understand co-insurance percentages, in-network vs. out-of-network or out-of-pocket max. I didn’t, and honestly, I don’t want to think about it anymore.

But I hope that the hours I spent figuring it out, filling out online “choose the best plan for me” questionnaires and asking questions of multiple insurance sales people pay off if I end up in the hospital.

And given the fact that I practice a combat sport, I know the time was well spent.

You can’t imagine how expensive hospitals can be. A tiny trip to the emergency room can set you back a thousand dollars. An overnight stay, tens or hundreds. A recent New York Times article profiled a 28-year-old woman whose 46-hour stay in a NYC hospital for a digestive illness called diverticulitis cost her $17,398.

Here’s a link to the story, about how young people are chronically uninsured, to the tune of 13.2 young people nation wide: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/18/nyregion/18insure.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=uninsured&st=cse

That said, here are things to think about when you’re buying health insurance. Most of the insurance company websites have questionaires that help you narrow down choices, and then provide tables that you can print to compare options between plans (and companies) — though some companies use different terminology for the same thing, so ASK QUESTIONS.

How often do you go to the doctor, and what for? Ex: regular office visits, specialist visits, hospital stays

Where do you go to the doctor? Do you most often visit your home doctor? Or are you traveling a lot and relying on walk-in clinics around the country? What about outside of the U.S.? Some plans are split into in-network and out-of-network rates and there can be a huge discrepancy between them. For example, when I looked into an Aetna plan, I found that the out-of-pocket max was thousands of dollars higher if the physician or health care center was out-of-network, and the representative on the phone told me that any physician outside of the state of Florida would be considered out-of-network. For a BJJ competitor who travels, that was not the plan to choose.

Meanwhile, when I spoke to Blue Cross Blue Shield about a plan with a comparable deductible, the out-of-pocket max was much lower for both in- and out-of-network doctors — and the representative told me that it would be considered in-network around the country and in many countries outside of the U.S.

How many prescriptions do you take and how often? Are you content with generics, which are usually cheaper? Do you have any prescriptions that you take monthly, or do you usually only take them when prescribed for a specific sickness or incident?

How much do you want to pay per month? Lower monthly payments usually mean less coverage, but if you’re going to pay a big chunk each month make sure you actually need the coverage you’re paying for.

How much can you afford to pay in a crisis?Think about and study your plan’s deductible, co-insurance and out-of-pocket max. You’re probably familiar with the term deductible, but you might not have any idea what co-insurance and out-of-pocket maxes are. I found that with both Aetna and Blue Cross and Blue Shield it took me multiple phone calls and multiple attempts to ask questions to get answers to those questions. Each plan is different, so make sure you understand the intricicies of the one you’re signing up for — and exactly how much the maximum you’d be required to pay is.

Who else do you need to insure? If you’re married or have children, you can usually include them in your plan (for a higher price, of course). Children over age 18 are often eligible into their early twenties as long as they’re in college, but otherwise, they’re not. If you’re gay, and you’ve lived with your partner for a certain period of time you can often purchase coverage together. Straight unmarried couples aren’t usually eligible to apply together.

Once you’ve actually selected a plan, your work isn’t done. Plan on about a month between when you submit your application and when your coverage will start — provided there aren’t any problems. Also, plan on spending a good hour or so on the online application, because they’ll ask you to record every single detail about every time that you went to a doctor in the last 10 years.

The company may also call you and ask questions about any of those doctor visits. They called me to ask about arthritis in my big toe — even though I’m a healthy, 24-year-old male. Keep in mind that the quoted rates assume that you’re healthy, so if you have a pre-existing medical condition they might slap you with a higher monthly premium.

It took me a long time to research, ask questions, apply and wait for approval — but in the end, I think it’s worth it to have the peace of mind that I’m covered in case something happens.

Will the distance keep YOU away from reaching your FULL POTENTIAL?

Will the distance keep YOU away from reaching your FULL POTENTIAL?

TL Naples BJJ and BJJEngineer: The Distance Problem

“Man you guys are far. I thought you had a gym near me? I live 35 miles away. It’s a 36 minutes drive, gas is expensive these days.”

I hear the above every time over e-mail, or a phone call. I thought it was about time we discussed this simple issue.

If you are picking a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school, regardless of your reason, you must realize it’s an investment! Weather you are investing in your entertainment, in your health, in your technical knowledge, your personal growth etc… it is still an investment.

Investment: the commitment of money, time, energy, and/or effort to a project with the expectation of some worthwhile result.

Now let me tell you an observation you can easily make when you visit a school (something to look for). If you go to any good school in the US you will find good people that travel from far places to get there. Even though there are training options closer to them, they will not take them, because they realize that 1 hour at a good place it’s a lot better than a week, a month, at another place.

Why will some one chose to go to Harvard over a local university? Why will some people fly thousands of miles and pay top money to attend business seminars, or listen to expensive public speakers? It is simply because they offer a high Return on Investment (ROI)!

In simple terms you can buy a business book or a law book from Barnes and Nobles for $15.00-$100. You may read it and learn a lot, but not anywhere near as if you actually had gone to a business seminar held by someone with a long track record for success, or by a Harvard Law School professor that can give you insights about the subject. If it is true that people will pay top money, and travel for these things why it wouldn’t be true for jiu-jitsu. Well it is true for jiu-jitsu as well. For example:

  • Mike Atkins (purple belt) at age 55+ has been driving for 4 years to attend Crazy 88 BJJ (www.88bjj.com) 1 hour every day. By the same token he is a Senior 2 and 3 Pan-American Champion (purple belt), World Champion (blue belt), and International Masters & Seniors, No-Gi PanAms Champion.
  • Julius Park drives 1 hour to Lloyd Irvin’s academy for over 4 years. Julius Park is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt with 10 years of experience in both competitive grappling and teaching. He is currently the Owner and Head Instructor of Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He began his training in 1998 with Renzo Gracie from whom he earned his Blue and Purple belt. In 2004, he began training with Team Lloyd Irvin, which was the #1 RATED team in both 2004 and 2006. He has competed and won in both GI and No-Gi tournaments all over the United States and continues to compete today. He has won over 40 Championships.
  • Mike Fowler used to drive 2 hours to Lloyd Irvin’s Academy when he was coming up. Mike is a Blue belt Pan Am Champion, Purple Belt Team USA vs. Brasil Champion, 2 American National Champion, Purple and Open class American National Champ, Bronze in the Copa de Mundo (World Cup) as a brown belt, Pan Ams Black Belt Silver Medalist and in ADCC 2007 defeated Renzo Gracie and Saulo Ribeiro.

Like this names there are many other stories out there that I just don’t know about. I have personally always been in a situation where I have had to travel long distances to make my jiu-jitsu better. Currently I fly every other weekend to Baltimore and Washignton DC to train and fix the whole in my game with Master Lloyd Irvin and Julius Park. This is very costly, but it makes my game and the game of my students better, and the ROI its ridiculous. I also currently drive my bike to teach classes. I don’t own a car. It’s a good warm-up. I currently have a student that drives his bike for an 1 hour to get to class. That’s 2 hours on his bike! Great for him! If you really want to reach your full potential you can make it happen, but please don’t go train at a school just because its 5 minutes away. You might call me one day and describe me another horror story.

Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro On His Eye Injury

Naples Martial Arts and BJJ

On September 17, 2007 in Hero’s GP Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante vs. Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro faced for the first time in a fight that lasted about 35 seconds into the first round after Calvacante took Ribeiro down and landed a second punch that caused Riberio’s Retina to become detached. A retinal detachment is a serious and sight-threatening event, occurring when the retina becomes separated from its underlying supportive tissue. The retina cannot function when these layers are detached, and unless it is reattached soon, permanent vision loss may result.

You might think working so much on BJJ would fill my life up - not true. I have a number of other ‘hats’ in life that I work on including:

  • Internet Engineer- I love technology and the internet and like to learn about any new development and start playing with it. From time to time I do side jobs: as small as a simple website or as large as an entire SEO project with blogs, website, advertising, etc…
  • Kayaking – I also like to be out in the wild alone. In Naples, FL I love to kayak and get away from everything. Take a look at the video below.

  • Salsa – Like any good Cuban I love to dance salsa. Believe it or not salsa and BJJ are very similar, yes and my coaches made fun of me many times when I told them that. But IT IS TRUE I SWEAR ;)!

  • Yoga - I started doing Yoga because one of my coaches said I needed to make improvements in my game. I used to be the guy that laughed at it, now I consider it essential and will do about 3 hours a week.

Ohhh and I also LOVE to eat good food . Like grilled pork Cuban Style! Thank God I have chefs on my team!
I hope that’s given a glimpse of who Roberto Torralbas is. If you’re a Jiu-Jitsu junkie and want to improve your game then I’d love to keep in touch. You can subscribe to this blog via one of numerous subscription methods and I’d love to hear from you about your experiences of blogging in the comments sections on my posts.
