Sleeve Drags are working very nicely!

Journal

Today I drilled 100 sleeve drags to unstoppable armbars( 50 to each side). I have a goal of hitting 1000 sleeve drags and I have been mixing the way I finish it ( to the back, to the  arm trapped sweep, etc..) my left side feels as good as 85 percent of my right side. So far I have drilled 550 sleeve  drags. most to the left side which used to be my weak side.

I trained for 1 full hours against two of my students (Andre, Joey)both blue belts. I did four seven minute matches alternating them, with 30 seconds break for a total of 28 continuous minutes of grappling then took a 7 minutes break. After that I did 3 more matches with 30 seconds break with the same blue belts, for another 21 minutes. The total grappling time was 49 minutes and the total rest time was 8.5 minutes. I need to keep adding more work to passing the De La Riva Guard.  Joey plays it very well and if I am tired he can give me too much of a hard time from it.

I also have been working on a technique to set up one of my favorite back take from De La Riva. I finally have almost perfected the entry into it. The finish needs work, but this technique has been working very nicely in tournaments and in the room against much bigger opponents.

On another note my Reverse De La Riva Around the World switch came alive today. I have to drill it more. I am very happy about my new guard development to both sides. I am starting to hit some of the Mendes brother Reverse De La Riva Sweeps consistently and feel comfortable with them.

One of the best benefits of the journal is the ability to reflect on your training, see what worked, or what didn’t.  It serves as a reminder of what not to next time or what to do.

Ohh and I almost forgot to mention that I also did one hour of personal training and I discover a cool kettle bell exercise and core exercise. I want to now integrate hot yoga once or twice a week into my training.

Finally I have to admit I didn’t write in my journal for a couple of days and I regret it because I would had liked to go back in time and recall my week of training. I have to make writing a journal article everyday a habit. I won’t let it happen again. The training journal is a great idea. I also need to develop a notebook to track my drilling sets so far:

  • 100 Sleeve drags to the  back to left side
  • 250 Sleeve drags to left with Arm-trapped Sweep
  • 100 Sleeve drags to Unstoppable Armbar to the right side
  • 100 Sleeve drags to Unstoppable Armbar to the left side

For a total of 550 reps! Half way there!

Closed Guard Work

http://www.oce.oregon.gov/images/products/details/OR3-12.jpg

Today I managed to meet my training objective of working to improve my closed guard.  I managed to do grip breaks and drags to my left side and 50 visualization drills to my left side. I also added a nice technique that came up from drilling and troubleshooting some points. I think I will call it U turn back take. I can’t wait to drill this more tomorrow. My goal is reach 1000 reps to the left and 100 reps visualized to the left!

Here is the break down:

Grip Break and Arm drag from closed guard : 100 reps to the left and 50 visualized to the left side!

By the way i tried grappling with the bad foot and it hurts but I am getting more comfortable rolling. I also rolled quite a bit just for fun.

Personal trainer and The Drilling Begins.

broken foot

Training Objective: Close Guard left side attacks!

Today I scheduled an appointment to get started with a personal trainer to work on my conditioning. Friday at 9 am it all starts.

I also have come to the realization that is super important to develop movements to both sides for the sake flow and synergy of the techniques. I have come up with a drilling chart and I have began making my left game as strong as my right game.

The only downside to my training is that my left foot is in a lot of pain which affects my drilling. I also did not meet my training objective and I did not have very productive day as far as improving my BJJ goes. Teaching, Family, Business and Exhaustion got in the way.

I was going to work on my training objective after class but I really wanted to make sure one of my students improved her Under Over Defense and another his X-Pass Passing so we each did 100 reps . Which I am very disappointed because I wanted to at least hit 500 reps. I want this blog to be honest and when I have a bad day I will publish it as well as when I have a good day. Here is how the break down went :
Under Over Defense: Swim Leg Over and Under to Straight Armlock: Left side 35 reps ( my right side is ok)

Under Over Armdrag Defense : Left side 20 reps, Right side 20 reps.

Under Over Armless Armbar Sweep With Counter to an opponent who rolls through: Left side 25.

Hopefully I can add to this numbers today. and complete yesterdays training objective.

Welcome to my Training Journal!

RIO OPEN Bronze

Hi readers,

I just returned from the IBJJF Rio International Championships in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. I will be posting some photos and some videos of my adventure and fights down there very soon, but I had a lot of time in the plane ride back to analyze what I needed to improve and work on. One thing was to start my online training journal, a project I have been wanting to begin for a while. In this category you will find a day to day account of my training. Why am I releasing these behind the door information , because my goal is to make myself more ACCOUNTABLE!

I have to thank Master Lloyd Irvin for taking Team Lloyd Irvin to newer heights everyday and making me race just to keep up with him. The training journal is something Master Lloyd has been an advocate of for many years and now I feel without detailed , disciplined training habits , it is impossible to keep up.

In the Rio Open I had 3 fights. I won his first Jiu-Jitsu match 8-0 with 2 take downs  and 2 sweeps and then took the back to defeat his quarterfinals opponent 4-0.  In the semifinals, he faced Francisco Iturral (Alliance) who had took Bronze at the World Championships.  Unfortunately, as I went for Francisco’s back I ended up in a foot lock.  I am never happy with bronze, but I am getting more comfortable in traveling and competing in Brazil and I look forward to improve on this results.
